Schindler Active Font - Architecture Typography

The Schindler Active font is my new commercial typeface inspired in the style of Austrian and later American architect Rudolph Schindler (*1887 †1953).
The font’s purpose is to be utilized in architectural plans lettering since there are not many typefaces in architecture with a hand-drawn style as it was done years ago.
Below is the image I’ve prepared with the character map should you want to license my design font. Contact darkvotum at gmail. Thanks.

Otto Regular Typeface - Saul Bass Movie Style Typography

Saul Bass’ design typography is an interesting subject in my commercial font collection. The fonts are suitable for suspense and thriller movies. Unstable and asymmetric and suit the feelings of the characters; anxiety and suspicion.

Otto Regular Font is my commercial design version for this kind of genre films and posters with non-horizontal baseline typefaces and thick-and-thin uppercase and oblique caps.

Below is the prepared image of the characters map and a 3D composite should you want to license my design font. Contact me – dark votum at gmail.

Kansas Rainbow Font - Wizard of Oz Movie Typography

I was surprised that no one had the idea of recreating the original movie title font of The Wizard of Oz (1939).

So, I went to the library of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in Hollywood to do some typographic research about this idea. I was pleasantly surprised with some help to find the typographic material of this classical American movie.

Here’s the alphabet image I’ve prepared with the final production of the font that I call Kansas Rainbow font, putting together the original glyphs drawings and class kerning. If you want to license this professional movie font for your projects, please contact dark votum at gmail. Thanks.

Mexican Llorona Colonial Font - Elegant Horror Type For Halloween

From my colonial Mexican foundry I made an elegant commercial Halloween font called Llorona because there are no fonts related to the most famous Hispanic legend. Interesting because there is an array of books, movies, apparel, and shows about her but no related fonts.

The colonial font is also used in displays of the Mansion of La Llorona at Six Flags Mexico. I really like the typeface because it is an old migrated Mexican font from the XVI century used by Catholic Spanish monks from Granada, Spain, but it can be used as a horror font for different purposes. The Llorona font is available for licensing should you want to use for your projects. Below you can find a sample of text and the compilation database. You know making typography is addictive as hell but the final product gives great satisfaction.

The Fantasmagoric Latino Legend of La Llorona - Hispanic Cultural Tradition

Even Universal Studios is engaged into bringing the character of La Llorona to Halloween Horror Nights. Of course, Hispanics are consumer money power in the United States. Here is the new 2010 press release of Universal Studios Hollywood to introduce the character of La Llorona into the Halloween Horror Nights as the official announcement to the public.

“LA LLORONA”— THE BLOODTHIRSTY SPECTRE OF MEXICAN LEGEND, TO STALK HALLOWEEN HORROR NIGHTS GUESTS ON THE UNIVERSAL BACKLOT AND WITHIN HER OWN “SCARE ZONE” AS UNIVERSAL STUDIOS HOLLYWOOD UNVEILS AN ALL-NEW HALLOWEEN HORROR NIGHTS EXPERIENCE FOR 2010.

So, what happens when you mix in a design the most powerful Latino female myth with the Mexican colonial typography of Jose Guadalupe Posada? Well, you have a classic winner t-shirt.

The tale of La Llorona (The Crying Woman or The Weeping Woman) is an old myth that goes through many centuries among Latino cultures. Every person in Latinoamerica, from Mexico to Argentina, swears to have seen or know someone about the fantasmagoric female apparition on crossroads, rivers or streets after midnight. My family and I are not the exception.

Although Wikipedia claims that the paranormal story of La Llorona is originated from Mexico, the truth is no one knows although she is commonly associated with a weeping Aztec goddess named Cihuacoalt from the city of Tenochtitlan. And La Llorona does exist. La Llorona has many popular interpretations. If you hear her weeping it means someone near you is about to die or she wants to collect the person’s soul for the Devil. Another interpretation is that this beautiful woman seduces men driving alone on the road. (The conceptual idea was my first award-winning commercial for Honda Motor Company).  The apparition wears very sensual clothing, usually white transparent in color, and as she takes these men to abandoned houses, she kills them without compassion with a knife.

She also steals babies because it is part of her story that she killed her children in a frustrated romance and later killed herself. More details are found in Wikipedia and the most recent website movie, The Cry (2007).

My design in high resolution vector format is in the Witches section should you want to support this amazing creepy tale. I’m sure if you wear the t-shirt people from Spanish-speaking countries will ask you if you have seen La Llorona too.

New Modern Mexican Blackletter Font - An Elegant Identity Typeface

We are proud of this accomplished project. Reading about the popular Mexican Blackletter font we found a great Maya project to do inspired with the ideas of our Lord Pakal Ahau for 2012. Although the original and rigid Mexican Blackletter font has been associated with Corona beer, cholos and gangs, Lord Pakal wanted to bring a more elegant identity to Mexico. This is how the new Mexican Blackletter typeface was born. We call it the Pakalian Normal font.

The project was not a simple task because Lord Pakal Ahau wanted to apply Gestalt principles, Maya shapes and the legacy of the original Mexican Blackletter font. In addition, he wanted a font identity that could represent true illuminated manuscripts and documents of the Pakalian Group of Mexico for future generations beyond 2012.

After many hours of debate, the ideas merged into one solid concept that we offer here for your entertainment and considerations. The result was a final font, an elegant Mexican Blackletter that brings the identity of the Pakalian Group of Mexico in all its glory. Below, you can find the font compilation database.

In Halloween We Trust - Creation of Fontorror Regular Typeface

In modern typography design, it seems deconstructivism is the serious trend in contemporary fonts. You only have to look at the 2012 Olympic logo to get an idea on why people hate or like the designer style.

Deconstructivism is not a new idea. It was advocated by Russian artist Wassily Kandinski and his belief in the Gesamtkunstwerk work in his Bauhaus years (1915-1933). If you want to read his art bible, I suggest you get a copy of Point And Line To Plane. Originally published in 1926, Dover Publications made a reprint in 1979, published by the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation for the Museum of Non-Objective Painting. For the trivia, there were 14 Bauhaus books edited by Walter Gropius and L. Moholy Nagy.

My new commercial font that I call Fontorror Regular is based on Bauhaus Deconstructivism ideas and is aimed to horror themes, such as Halloween greeting cards, special logos and movie titles. Here’s the Fontorror Regular font database should you want to license the new commercial font from my foundry. You can contact me at darkvotum at gmail.

More Beautiful Mexican Typography From Jose Guadalupe Posada - Dark Fonts

First, let me say that I despise grunge deteriorated typography in designs. The stains do not follow any typeface principles. If I have a choice I would prefer graffiti typography, a considered art crime for some, because at least I can say the artist is using ascender and descender lines in the glyphs.

Putting that rant away, my new commercial font that I call Posada Diablo was discovered in my typography research at the archives of the Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico, Instituto de Investigaciones Filologicas, Centro de Estudios Literarios.

The typeface is very different from the Posada Normal font that I released recently as it was used for cover book illustrations, but the Mexican style is consistent. I don’t have idea of Posada’s intentions when he created the Posada Diablo typeface, but definitely it was not intended for children’s books. In addition, there was one more typeface he created for more conservative books such as Mexican revolutionary and history books. I intend soon to recreate this old Mexican font as part of my Posada font collection.

Because it was difficult to find good examples of Posada Diablo’s metrics typography, I used the kerning and spacing font metrics tables of the great Macromedia company. They are really precise and accurate without distortion.

Here is below the Posada Diablo font database. If you want to license this new commercial font, please contact me at darkvotum at gmail. Thanks for your considerations.

Vote For The Devil Logo - A Dark Vector For 2012

I think this design is timely not because I made it but it will come as a revelation done by our Maya Director of the Pakalian Group, Lord Pakal Ahau. He does not talk about his revelation but I feel day after day the pressure on his shoulders to reveal more.

Anyway, the high resolution print is in the Spells section should you want to consider that 2012 is two years away and something really dark is coming to a neighborhood near you.

My Own Wild Funeral Party - Romancing the Dead Music Through Dark Designs

If you’re a fan of dark designs and dead events like I am, I’ve prepared this beautiful and intelligent t-shirt print for your entertainment and consideration.
The design is based on one of my favorite Mexican artists of all times, Juan Guadalupe Posada, and his engravings with skulls or calaveras make me feel I’m looking to the scenes through X-rays.
In this recent work, I’ve modified the engraving to accomodate the idea of my own funeral party. The way I would like to invite to my funeral a mariachi to play corridos while people dance, drink and eat all night with my custodian angels romancing the dead music. I think you won’t find a better t-shirt related to death rituals.
The high resolution vector print is available in the Spells section should you want to romance your own funeral and death with a big celebration. I will probably leave as my wish to be dressed in the coffin with my t-shirt. Otherwise, order it and enjoy the t-shirt while you’re alive. The dark theme is elegant and sophisticated. Impress the living!

Learn How To Get Miss Venezuela's Makeup From A Cosmetic Artist

Years ago in my country I was a makeup artist for the Miss Venezuela event and I’m sure you wonder how these girls really achieve the magic of cosmopolitan beauty placing very high in Miss Universe year after year. I was very young when I met Osmel Souza, the creator and promoter of Miss Venezuela. A really wise guy for world fashion.
I got into that business after watching one contest that was a bitch fight. Two girls coming from rich families. Mariela Perez Branger and Peggy Kopp. It was the best beauty show I’ve ever seen. Details to elegance was the trademark of the show. Mariela’s perfect catwalk and Peggy’s flamboyant attitude.
Since then, the beauty school of Miss Venezuela pageant has changed a lot. Each candidate is prepared for at least 10 years as Osmel envisioned in education, modeling, fashion, communication and poise. In makeup learning, I’ve seen really beautiful work in these girls aimed to camera and lights.
I won’t tell you all the secrets but at least there are some tips you can learn if you want to achieve what I call the beauty bitch look.
I’ve prepared a photorealistic 3D image to give you an idea of the possibilities whether you’re planning your wedding, a beauty contest, or a simple graduation in your school. Don’t neglect to look the best on these memorable days.
Your makeup should be simple and usually divided in three areas: your face, your eyes and your lips. For the face, you need to choose colors for the base, contour, midtones and highlights. For the eyes, it is a little more complicated because you need to pay attention to the eyebrows, the eyelashes, the eyelids, below the eyelashes, the side of the eyes, the lower part of the eyes and the corner of your eyes. There are as many as eight zones to work in the eyes. For your lips, you choose the color base, delineate and refine the corners.
That’s it. If you learn the tricks I assure you people will ask you if you went to a cosmetic school. Below, it is my prepared image with those famous and perfect almond eyes that make all Miss Venezuela girls win competitions all around the world. The judges always choose the best. Try to achieve what I’ve included in the picture and you can be a winner. If you have questions or want to hire me as a beauty consultant, I'm available in Los Angeles.

Virgin of Guadalupe's Dead Tattoo - New Skin Art

There are many versions of the popular image of Mexico’s Virgin of Guadalupe. This one was recreated from an original and rare print I have from Jose Guadalupe Posada’s engravings, made in 1895. The print is in full color for a client of mine.
He wanted a high resolution tattoo in his skin as a personal birthday’s gift. Posada’s art was a model for the Mexican muralists as a popular artist producing vivid and simple images in a distinctively non-European mode with strong elements of political satire. He is best known for his calaveras, witty images of skeletons performing the rituals and pleasures of everyday life. Often dressed in bourgeois finery, they mock the pretensions and vanity of the living.

Choosing Demonic Names For A Newborn - Celebrate the Dark Wisdom

It seems to be a normal trend in the 21st Century to give a dark name to a baby and I love it because that baby will grow with a dark wisdom never attained before in previous generations. In fact, I don’t have to tell you that the initials of my complete name is LCF as well.
Here’s my list of my favorite demonic names with the corresponding gender so you can search for the meaning somewhere else. They are very powerful names of the Underworld Kingdom.

Abracadabra Fantasy Logo - An Old Magic Spell

The first time I saw the word Abracadabra was in a British Masonic Encyclopedia. I was attracted to the disposition of letters and the explanation that the triangle of words was a old magic amulet. Needless to say, I made my own amulet and put it around my neck.

Abracadabra is a spell incantation used as a magic word in conjuring demonic tricks that historically was believed to have healing powers when inscribed on an amulet. The first known mention of the word Abracadabra was in the 2nd century AD in a poem called De Medicina Praecepta or Principles of General Medicine.

Abracadabra sounds as the Aramaic word “Abrahadabra” which roughly translates into “I will create as I speak.”

My original high resolution print for apparel is in the Spells section should you want to conjure demons for your own benefit. You can order and customize the t-shirt in several background colors and sizes. It’s a great night party tshirt for full moon!

Jackie Kennedy and The Devil - Typography Design

Every time there is a full moon, I see the face of Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy stamped on the moon. I’m not surprised because my relation with her is extremely powerful to explain it in short lines. In my Witches altar, I have her photograph (the only one) which was personally dedicated and signed to me.

As a matter of fact, one night after my only surgical intervention in 1994 I woke up four hours later thinking about her. I had a small transistor radio and I listened to the news that Jackie had died that night during my medical intervention. Her funeral mass events are explained here. National Public Radio said that during the funeral, Maurice Tempelsman read the poem Ithaka (1911) written by Constantine P. Cavafy, who also happens to be my favorite author. The translation and alternative translation are found in this page.

As my tribute to the only First American Lady I know, I’ve made her typographical portrait that I called Jackie Kennedy and The Devil. The typographical portrait includes another Cavafy’s poem entitled Hidden Things (1908), which is a poem that represents my philosophy of life.

Hidden Things by C.P. Cavafy

From all I did and all I said
let no one try to find out who I was.
An obstacle was there distorting
the actions and the manner of my life.
An obstacle was often there
to stop me when I’d begin to speak.
From my most unnoticed actions,
my most veiled writing -
from these alone will I be understood.
But maybe it isn’t worth so much concern,
so much effort to discover who I really am.
Later, in a more perfect society,
someone else made just like me
is certain to appear and act freely.

The high resolution print is available in the Witches section should you want to remember why the President Kennedy’s administration was the only Camelot in America. It won’t happen again!

Fallen Angel | Gustave Dore’s Magnificent Illustration

Fallen Angel is an illustration that I curated based on one of Gustave Dore’s engravings. The illustration is found in John Milton’s famous epic poem, Paradise Lost, written in 1667.

The story begins with Satan, one of the characters of the book, and of course, my favorite one. Satan awakes in hell, having lost his rebellion against God in heaven. He awakens his followers; begins to plot revenge against God by corrupting God’s newest creation, Man; and convenes a council of the fallen angels.

The illlustration is dramatic and majestic at the same time and you can find the high print resolution for apparel in the Fantasy section.

According to the Necronomicon, the Book of the Laws of the Dead, the Devil’s Trinity consists of three spiritual characters - Satan, the Devil and Lucifer.

666 Number Power Superhero Logo – Captain Devil Rules!

Since I was a child watching Captain America I always wanted to make a design of the Devil superhero logo. Something like Captain Devil in action colors.

So, here it is in all its demonic splendor with evil powers. The high resolution print is available in apparel in the Magicians section. Get your Devil superhero logo print with the magic numbers 666 of the Beast and amaze your friends.

Lucifer’s Fingerprint Tattoo – Nine Gates of the Kingdom of Shadows

So, you want a real devil’s tattoo stamped on your skin forever, huh? I find this stamp is usually overlooked by most people looking for the real thing in functional dark designs.

If you look closer to the illustrations of the book Nine Gates of the Kingdom of Shadows written by Aristide Torchia, you’ll find Lucifer’s fingerprint signature stamped with initials at the bottom of the engravings. Better than a Harley-Davidson commercial ad tattoo for chubbies in leather.

If you don’t know about fingerprint authentication, look here. No two individuals—even identical twins—have fingerprints that are exactly alike.

I traced the tiny signature as a vector and the print is available in apparel in the Tattoo section if you want to be proud of your Master and sport to the world your satanic allegiance.

Purple Moon Princess - How to Make Evil Fantasy Art

Evil fantasy art is very difficult to produce for apparel. It has to be cool and at the same time sadness should be consistent with a world both familiar and strange. The conflict of interest in the design allows a force with great power and malevolence to play with natural elements versus human elements.

In this case, I’ve combined a Celtic purple moon in ascendant phase from the lunar year with an innocent wicked fairy, who in many fairy tales such as in Perrault’s Sleeping Beauty, has been cursed by her godmother to remain in the moon on her fifteen’s birthday until she finds love.

To order, the high resolution print is in apparel in the Witches section as part of my collection of female villains. If I would write a fantasy book about it, I would call it ‘The Legend of the Purple Moon Princess’ to remind the reader that in every rare purple moon there is an innocent girl transformed into a wicked fairy waiting to find love.

Eighth Devil's Gate Engraving - Novem Portis

I curated the original 8th Devil’s Gate engraving made by Lucifer to distinguish it from the Aristide Torchia illustration, who changed the drawing for fear of being retaliated by the Church.

The Latin coded words in the engraving are VIC.I.T VIR., and belongs to a nice motto in Latin, VICTA IACET VIRTUS. The English translation says, VIRTUE IS CONQUERED.

The description of the xilography explains that before the fortified walls of a town, a kneeling woman (a monk in AT illustration) offers her neck to the executioner. In the background, a wheel of fortune or destiny with three people on it, – one at the summit, another climbing and another descending. The three figures on the wheel represent the three phases of the Medieval Age with the words, I rule (regno), I ruled (regnavi) and I will rule (regnabo).

To order it, the high resolution engraving is available in this section should you want to collect it and open the Eighth Gate of the Devil.

Seventh Devil's Gate Engraving - Novem Portis

I’m almost done with the Novem Portis de Umbrarum Regni and the Aristidem Torchia engravings. Still, I haven’t decided it to post the invocation ritual of the Devil that opens the Nine Gates. It is my experience in life that I’ve transformed lives, give them what they want, and no one, I mean no one appreciates my effort. My consolation is once they abandon the Master, they lose their enlightened path and become miserable people.

Anyway, the seventh plate, made by Lucifer, has the description with Latin coded words, —DIS.S P.TI.R MAG., which is not very explicit in principle but very common with Hermetic philosophers in Latin, DISCIPULUS POTIOR MAGISTRO. The English translation is, THE DISCIPLE OUTSHINES THE MASTER. Very appropriate to my introduction of this post.

A king and a begger play chess on a chess board with white squares. The Moon can be seen through the window. Beneath this and next to a closed door, two dogs are fighting. The Moon is the refuge of dead souls. The black dog and the white dog represent the Evil and the Good, destroying themselves continuously.

The high resolution print is available in this section should you want to order it in apparel and open the 7th Gate of the Devil.

Sixth Devil's Gate Engraving - Novem Portis

This is my favorite satanic plate of all Nine Gates of the Devil from Novem Portis. It includes a Latin phrase that really belongs to Lucifer’s domain but also it is a learning fact for those who meditate about Death as I did many years ago during my Tibetan years.

The Latin coded words in the engraving are written as —DIT.SCO M.R., which is in Latin, DITESCO MORI. The translation in English means, I ENRICH MYSELF WITH DEATH.

The satanic description of the plate includes a hanged man, similar to that of the Tarot card number 12, his hands tied behind his back, hung by one foot from the crenellation of the wall surrounding the castle, next to a closed postern gate. A hand clad in a gauntlet brandishes a burning sword from a loophole. Lucifer as a master of freedom suffers for Mankind’s love and give him the knowledge through sacrifice.

The high-resolution engraving is available in the Spells section in vector format and printed in apparel so you can order it and impress your boring friends.

Fifth Devil's Gate Engraving - Novem Portis

I decided that this big project of the Nine Gates of the Devil’s curated engravings from Novem Portis should belong in the Dark Shadows Collection to differentiate it from my general Dark Votum Designs in the blog. That’s why the new revised blog title.

So, let’s continue. The fifth engraving brings the Latin coded words, FR.ST.A., which means FRUSTRA. In English, the translation is IN VAIN.

The description of the engraving is about greediness and money. A miser, or a merchant, counts his gold pieces. Behind him, Death holds an hourglass in one hand and a farmer’s fork on the other. Why a fork and not a scythe? Because Death blinds and the Devil collects.

The high-resolution print is in this section so you can order it in apparel of several background colors and size selection.

Fourth Devil's Gate Engraving - Novem Portis

In the Novem Portis de Umbrarum Regni, the Book of the Nine Gates of the Kingdom of Shadows, we find the fourth devil’s gate with the following Latin coded words, FOR. N.N OMN. A. QUE., which is, FORTUNA NON OMNIBUS AEQUE. Translated into English is, Chance Is Not The Same For All.

The description of the engraving presents a jester before a stone maze. The entrance is closed by a door. Three dice on the ground each reveal three of their faces, showing the numbers 1, 2 and 3. The bufoon symbolizes Destiny and he is the Joker of the deck. He carries the symbolic serpent in his hand. The three dice represent a symbol, meaning whoever exercise his liberty and risk everything, can win a distinct destiny.

The high-resolution print is available in this section so you can visit the page and order the apparel.

Third Devil's Gate Engraving - Novem Portis

The third devil’s gate engraving comes from the Latin coded words in the Delomelanicon, VERB. D.SUM C.S.T ARCAN., which is written as VERBUM DIMISSUM CUSTODIAT ARCANUM. The English translation, although not correct but accepted, says : Wasted Breath Keeps A Secret. The correct transliteration should be, The Missing Word Keeps A Secret.

The engraving is significative. A vagrant, or a pilgrim, heads towards a bridge which spans a river that joins heaven with hell. At each end, a fortified door bars access. On a cloud, a bowman represents the rage of God and aims in the direction of the road leading to the bridge, as if there is a terrible warning. Not recommended to play with secret things.

The high-resolution print can be ordered in this section in apparel of several background colors and size selection.

Second Devil's Gate Engraving - Novem Portis

My second curated plate includes the Latin coded phrase, CLAUS. PAT. T, which is, —CLAUSAE PATENT. The English translation is “Open That Which Is Closed”.

A hermit before a closed door. A lantern on the ground and two keys in his left hand. Next to him, a sign that resembles the Hebrew letter Teth.

The hermit means knowledge and wisdom. The black dog is the same dog that accompanies Agripa. It is the preferred animal for the Devil to reincarnate. The lamp belongs to the philosopher Diogenes, who always refused temporal powers, and asked to the powerful Emperor Alexander to move from the sun and his shadow to make the Light

The high-resolution plate can be ordered in apparel in this section in several background colors and size selection.

First Devil's Gate - Dark Book of Shadows

This project is a long design production that I finally decided to curate and make the vector designs for the bibliophiles and fans of the Novem Portis – Book of Shadows.

If you have seen the Ninth Gate movie directed by Roman Polanski you will probably recognize the engravings (xilographies), some made by Lucifer himself. The 1999 movie is the version of the Spanish book The Club Dumas, written by Arturo Perez-Reverte and it is a powerful invitation to deal with the occult.

According to the Delomelanicon, the illustrator added the Latin coded phrase at the bottom, NEM. PERV.T QUI N.N LEG. CERT.RIT, which, of course, is NEMO PERVENIT QUI NON LEGITIME CERTAVERIT, translated as ‘No one that follows the rules, gets the truth”. Lucifer changes the phrase as “Silence is Golden”, with his stamp LCF.

The plate description is very straightforward. A knight rides through a fortified town. With his finger on his lips, he counsels prudence or silence.

I didn’t bother adding the Latin secret words but the translation in English since most of the people do not care about Latin studies and Medieval languages; however I included at the top the Hebrew letters as codes.

The first design is here in this section and you’re welcome to collect all the designs. They are nine gates in total. Each one with a Saturnine philosophy about darkness. In the future, I will post the invocation ritual so you know how it is done by alchemists and magicians.
